Vocabulary for I.R (Week One)

Words I found in my book that I didn't understand, or that sounded cool are:

Independant Reading Book

The book I will be reading will be Eldest by Christopher Paolini. This will be the second time for me to read it.

FHP Reflection

Project Title: Family History Project
Class: Humanities
Dates: 10/17/07

PURPOSE
In this section, explain what you were supposed to learn and what you were supposed to do.

The purpose of this project was to learn about our family and an important event that changed their life. To learn about it, we had to interview someone, and take notes for a historical narrative. We added a entry from out journal and an interview write up. We also had to have a least four “artifacts”, such as pictures. In the end, we either put it in a book, or scrap booked it.

WHAT I LEARNED
In this section, tell what information or skills you learned or improved.

What I learned from this project was about my mom's immigration. I learned what she had to go through to immigrate, and about the Chinese Exclusion act. I learned why people immigrated, which was mostly because of the Gold Rush. They also immigrated because there was freedom in America.
Some skills I learned from this project was interviewing people. I haven't interviewed many people before, so it was a good learning experience for me. Since I decided to make my project into a book instead on the scrapbook. I had to bind it and that was a little new to me. The binding wasn't hard, but it was something different.

REFLECTION
In this section, reflect on your experience. Did you like the project? Why or why not? How did you do? What would you do differently next time?


I liked this project a little bit because it was fun but hard at the same time. It was fun going around on the sharing night looking at other people projects, because it feels like it's over until you have to do this reflection. It was hard because there were a lot of components we had to do and one of them was interviewing. I haven't interviewed many people, so it was still a little new. It was also hard because I often felt I was cutting it a little close, and I wondered if I was doing it right.
I did this project again, some things I would change would be my interview questions. I would change them because I didn't fell that they were that great. I would also change how my interview went, because it didn't go as well as I imagined. Another thing I would change would be the event, because it would be boring to the same project over and over. I would also and get things done faster because I often felt I was cutting things a little close.

ARTIFACTS
You should have at least one artifact from each project on your DP. What document, picture, or link will you have for this project?

Some things from this project that I will put on my DP is my book. I will put the separate documents, but not the pictures because I don't think my mom would appreciate the whole world seeing them.

The Wave Final Post

#1. “For the rest of your lives…never, ever, allow a group’s will to usurp your individual rights.” (pg.135, The Wave) I think this quote means that you are always capable of doing what you want. I also think that is means that don't let a group take over your power.
I could apply this to my life if I joined a group and I couldn't do certain things because the group restricts me from doing that. I think a good example of that is if you joined a gaming club, and they don't let you do your homework. Them not letting you do your homework is them restricting you from something you want to do. Sooner or later you'll either have to leave the club, or they won't let you do anything else if you stay.

#2. At the beginning of the book, Robert seems to be the class joke and everyone picks on him. But when he joins The Wave, everyone is equal and he feels he fits in better which I think is true. Then at the end of the book, The Wave ends which supported him. It makes him lose his self esteem he gained while he was in The Wave.
I think Mr. Ross is going to try and help out Robert so that things don't revert back to how they were in the beginning. I think Ben is going to do this by whenever he gets picked on, the person who tormented him will get punished. I think Robert will depend on Ben as much as he did on The Wave, because Mr. Ross is now his only support. I also think that Robert possibly thinks that Ben did this to make him feel even lower. That is why Ben is going to talk to Robert that he was sorry about The Wave and what happened.

#3a. The Wave is very fascism because Ben acts like a dictator. He also has complete power over the students who joined which is another sign of fascism. Also he takes control over there choices so that they can only do somethings. Ben also made The Wave a logo, membership cards, and solutes which made it more psychologically more like The Wave had to everything Mr. Ross said.
#3b. Some examples in history where people experienced fascism is during World War Two, and Hitler was a dictator and created the Nazis. This historical event is very close to the events in this book by the logos and how you couldn't attend school events without being part of that group. Also it is fascist because they were racist against the Jewish people and used them as scapegoats. Also Hitler had complete control over the Nazis and did what ever he told them to do.

#4. “Avoiding Mob Mentality: A Practical Guide by A Middle Student, for Other Middle School Students.” Mob Mentality is when a group of people start acting up and they lose control of themselves. The group could be a couple people, or a couple hundred people. A good example is when someone gets scared at night at a slumber party because of a noise. Now all your friends get freaked out when you get freaked out it gets out of control, because your cats jumps into a bush. The main point is that something happens to one person and it happens to everyone else. It shows that your imagination can overpower reality. In The Wave's case, The Wave was a whole new thing, and some one's friends joins, and then you want to join, and before you know it, the whole school is doing the same thing and have lost control over their actions. That's a big thing with mob mentality, is that you might think you lose control over your actions and it causes you to do things you don't want to do.
You can avoid this by not joining anything you don't trust or if the activities are things you know are not right. A lot of times, people join these groups even if they don't want to because of peer pressure. Peer pressure will get you do things don't want to because your friends are doing it and they persuade you into it. If this ever happens to you, find new friends.

The Wave op#5

#1 Null

#2. The line I chose is, "Frome the center of the audience a single fustrated student suddenly jumped up from his seat and shouted at Mr. Ross, 'There is no leader, is there!'" (pg.133 The Wave) I liked this line because it shows that some students didn't truly beleif in The Wave, and didn't trust Ben.

The Wave op#4

#1. I think that Mr. Ross is thinking, "Ok, how will this turn out? Ooohh, that wasn't so good..." It seems like he started a football game with new plays he has never tried out, and now he is getting punished for it. I think that is what he is thinking because of how uneasy he is whenever something about The Wave that was unexpected comes up.

#2. The line that stands out to me is, "Somewhere in his mind he knew that by agreeing to let Robert be his bodyguard, he was also agreeing that he was a person who required a bodyguard." (pg.84, The Wave) That lines stands out to me becuase it shows that he didn't expect it to happen and he has to think about it.

#3. Do you think that The Wave will make it so all school events you have to be in The Wave to join? Why?

#1. Some clues I found are that people were cutting class to come to his class. Also everyone wants to join now. I think this is a bad thing because they're going to have more power and it may be uncontrollable.

#2. The line that stood out to me was, "Be seated, Mr. Ross ordered, and instantly the class sat. (pg.60, The Wave). This line really stood out to me because it shows that Mr. Ross has control of the class. It makes me think that his class will do whatever Mr. Ross wants them to do.

#3. What do you think Mr. Ross will do with the kids in The Wave, now that he has complete control? Why?

The Wave op#2

#1. The motto "Strength through community, Strenth through discipline, " has been spreading around the school by the football team. David and Brad were in The Wave and decided that The Wave is what they needed for the football team.

#2. "As he rushed into the classroom he expected to find a madhouse, but he was in for a suprise." (pg. 41, The Wave). I liked that line because it shows that somthing he isn't going to expect is going to happen.

#3. How quick do you the The Wave will spread through out the school? Why?
